A superb crescent of golden sand, the beach stretches south from the attractive village of Cruden Bay and its harbour Port Erroll. The beach is reached by the white Ladies Bridge across the Water of Cruden. Nearby is a car park, if this is full there is additional car parking at the harbour where there is a seasonal café. The fishing station here is one of the few left in Scotland where fishermen use fixed bag nets to catch salmon. It was from this beach on July 30th 1914, that the Norwegian aviator, Tryggve Gran, made the first solo flight across the North Sea landing at Stavanger in Norway. A member of Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition, he had later learnt to fly in France and bought a Bleriot X1 monoplane. This was sent north in a crate and reassembled at Cruden Bay.Seaside award.
