Balvenie Castle (HS)

Balvenie Castle (HS)
A fine 13th century castle, added to in the 15th and 16th centuries. Visited by Mary Queen of Scots in 1562.
Defended by a magnificent curtain wall and an iron yet, Balvenie was a strong hold of the powerful Black Comyns, rivals to Robert the Bruce in the early 1300s. It ultimately became the Renaissance residence of the Earls of Athill, who built the Atholl Lodging with its grand circular tower.
