Balnahard Beach

A superb sandy beach on north east coast of Colonsay.

One of Colonsay’s most beautiful and isolated beaches, it has splendid views north to the Isle of Mull and east to Scarba and Jura. There are sheltered spots at the north end of the bay. Here and further down the beach you’ll find the massive riveted timbers of the steam ship ‘Wasa’ wrecked in 1919. The dunes, some of which are carpeted with dense mats of burnet rose, and the machair further inland, are excellent for wild flowers. Balnahard Bay is a rewarding 3.5 mile walk from the car park close to Kiloran Bay.
