Crinan Canal

An amazing achievement in its day, the canal opened in 1801. It allows vessels to reach the West Highlands without rounding the treacherous Mull of Kintyre. Good viewing points at Cairnbaan and Crinan Basin.

Running for nine miles between Ardrishaig and Crinan, the canal was built to save sailing boats from the difficult passage around the Mull of Kintyre. Well used even today, the canal passes through some wonderful scenery that is especially beautiful around Crinan.
