This lighthouse designed by Thomas Stevenson and completed in 1872 marks the Torran Rocks – 10 square miles of treacherous reefs off the coast of Mull. 30 ships were wrecked here between 1804 and 1854. It was constructed on top of an exposed rock - 15 miles south west of Mull - that was often swept by huge seas. Even for the Stevensons, this was a major engineering achievement. During the construction of the lighthouse it was visited by Thomas Stevenson’s son – the young Robert Louis Stevenson, who was later to set the shipwreck in ‘Kidnapped’ on the Torran rocks.
