Dunchraigaig Cairn

Dunchraigaig Cairn
A large Bronze Age cairn with three cists, and nearby some impressive standing stones and rock carvings.
Surrounded by trees, this large cairn was built in the early Bronze Age, about 4000 years ago. When it was excavated in 1864, three stone lined graves or cists were discovered. The most unusual of these cists is the one covered by a massive capstone. It contained the remains of up to ten people, along with a whetstone, a greenstone axe and a flint knife.Signposted off the A816, the cairn has its own car park. From here there are paths out to the Baluachcraig cup and ring marks and the impressive Ballymeanoch standing stones.
