Glebe Cairn (HS)

The northernmost cairn of an extraordinary Bronze Age linear cemetery.

This large cairn Bronze Age was built some 4000 years ago. It was excavated in 1864. Among the items discovered were a jet necklace and a Bronze Age pot, possibly from Ireland. The jet necklace was subsequently destroyed in a fire at nearby Poltalloch House, however you can see the pot in the Kilmartin House Museum just beside the cairn. The cairn forms part of an extraordinary 2km long ‘linear cemetery’ of five cairns that stretch south from Kilmartin. They are best appreciated together from the footpath that runs between Kilmartin and Nether Largie.
