Nether Largie North Cairn

Nether Largie North Cairn
An impressive cairn with a large central cist; its capstone is carved with cup marks and axe heads.
Built about 4000 years ago this Bronze Age cairn as a large central cist with a heavy capstone. The underside of the stone is carved with some 40 cup marks suggesting that it may have been fashioned from an even earlier standing stone. Though difficult to see some faintly carved axe heads overlay the cup marks. When the grave was excavated in 1930 all that was found was one human molar. The cairn was largely reconstructed in the 1970s to allow access to the cist. It forms part of an extraordinary 2km long ‘linear cemetery’ of five cairns that stretch south from Kilmartin. They are best appreciated together from the footpath that runs between Kilmartin and Nether Largie.
