Nether Largie South Cairn

Built some 5000 years ago this was originally a chambered tomb, it forms part of an extraordinary linear cemetery that stretches south from Kilmartin.

The oldest of the Kilmartin group of cairns, it was built some 5000 years ago, as a chambered tomb where a number of dead would have been buried. Later in the Bronze Age it was enlarged into a round cairn and two stone lined cists added. The cairn forms part of an extraordinary 2km long ‘linear cemetery’ of five cairns that stretch south from Kilmartin. They are best appreciated together from the footpath that runs between Kilmartin and Nether Largie.
