Temple Wood Stone Circles

An extraordinary site, with two stone circles and burial cists, it may have been used for over 2000 years.

This fascinating and complex site seems to have been in use for over 2000 years between the Late Neolithic and early Bronze Agee, 5000 to 3500 years ago. At first it served a ritual purpose when two stone circles were built. The southern circle had 22 standing stones of which only 13 remain. One of these is marked with a spiral symbol similar to those found in Irish passage graves. Later it was used for funerary purposes with burial cists being placed both inside and outside the main stone circle. The site is best reached from the car park next to the Nether Largie Standing Stones.
