Sawney Bean's Beach

A small sand and shingle beach below steep cliffs with a large cave.

This small beach is named after the legendary Sawney Bean who is supposed to have lived in the large cave here in the 1500s. He and his family were reputed to be cannibals who murdered passers-by and ate their flesh. The beach is reached by an unmarked, steep path, from the north end of the car park beside the A77, some three miles to the north of Ballantrae.
