Craignethan Castle (HS)

Craignethan Castle (HS)
The last great private fortress to be constructed in Scotland, Craignethan was begun about 1530.
An exceptional fortress-residence that was overthrown within 50 years of its construction despite its state-of-the-art artillary defences. Built about 1530, it was the branchild of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, King James V's talented master of works. There is evidence of his many military innovations, including a shooting gallery or caponier. But within a generation it was 'cast doun' by order of the Privy Council. The surrounding woodland in the deep Nethan gorge is rich with wildflowers and birdlife.
