Dunrobin Castle (Garden)

This ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland is the largest house in the Scottish Highlands. Re-modelled in the 1840s, it has great formal gardens and a museum.

The largest house in the Scottish Highlands, Dunrobin incoporates a 13th Century keep hidden from view by a series of later additions. Home of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland, the house was completely remodelled in the 1840s by Sir Charles Barry, the architect who had designed the House of Parliament in London. The principle rooms, some with great views out over the gardens to the sea, include a superb drawing room, a great library, the Duke’s study, bedrooms and kitchens. The formal gardens, laid out by Sir Charles Barry, were inspired by the gardens of Versailles. A wide range of plants flourish here. The museum next to the garden is most housing a bizarre collection of stuffed birds and animals from around the world – trophies of the 5th Duke. Also in the display are some exquisite pictish symbol stones.Restaurant, castle shop, falconry displays, woodland walks.
