Sweetheart Abbey (HS)

Sweetheart Abbey (HS)
The splendid ruin of a late 13th century and early 14th century Cistercian abbey, founded by Devorgilla, Lady of Galloway, in memory of her husband.
A monument to human and divine love, Sweetheart Abbey was named for its founder, lady Dervorgilla, who was buried here with the embalmed heart of her beloved husband. War inflicted much damage to the buildings. But the abbey church, with a stone efficy of the founder, survives almost intact.
