This superb park between Princes Street and the Old Town was once flooded by the waters of the Nor’ Loch, the northern defence of the city. It was drained gradually from 1759 onwards and finally opened in 1818 as a private garden for Princes Street residents. It was not until 1876 that it became a public park.
