Enclosed by a boundary wall this site on the summit of Calton Hill was a flourishing Royal then City Observatory for over 200 years. The central Playfair Building, that looks like a Greek temple, housed a 6 inch refractor in its dome and a 6.4 inch transit telescope in its eastern wing. The City Dome in the north east corner once contained a 22 inch refractor. The observatory is no longer active.
