This simple memorial at the top of the Grassmarket marks the spot where over a 100 Covenanters were hanged for their religious beliefs between 1661 and 1688. It was also the site of many other executions. Covenanters were Scots who had signed the National Covenant to confirm their opposition to Stuart Kings interfering in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.
