Forth Bridge

A wonder of the Victorian engineering world, this extraordinary steel bridge was built between 1882 and 1890. Almost two miles long, it expands by a metre between winter and summer. It is held together by over six millions rivets and the largest steel tubes on the cantilevers are wide enough to fit a London Underground train into. The three main cantilevers are named (south to north) Queensferry, Inchgarvie and Fife. The best views of the bridge are from the southern banks of the Forth at the Edinburgh waterfront suburb of South Queensferry. There are also two memorials here to the men who died during its epic construction.
