The square takes its name from Parliament House built here in 1641 to house the Scottish Parliament.

The square takes its name from Parliament House built here in 1641 to house the Scottish Parliament. The building with its fine hammerbeam roof still stands, but is now hidden by a façade of more modern buildings. It was used by the Scottish Parliament until the Act of Union with England in 1707.
