This ornate fountain, cast in France in the early 1860s, was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862. It is named after the local gun maker Daniel Ross who donated it to the city. With its naked female figures it had mixed reception when it was finally re-erected in the 1872. The dean of the nearby St John’s Episcopal Church described it as ‘grossly indecent and disgusting’.
