Isle of May Lighthouse

This was the last remaining private lighthouse when purchased by the Northern Lighthouse Board in 1814. Their own lighthouse was lit in 1816. A later lower light was built which, when aligned with the main light, guided ships away from the North Carr Rock, off Fife Ness. The buildings associated with this lower light later became part of Scotland’s first bird observatory in 1934. Today the island is a national nature reserve, with rich bird life. There are regular boat trips from Anstruther.
