Ben Nevis 1344m (4409ft)

The highest and most supreme of all Scottish mountains rises above the western seaboard and Fort William.

The highest mountain in Scotland certainly has stage presence; superlatives possibly aren’t enough to describe it. It is a massive bulk of a mountain with relentless western slopes, which rise from sea level near Fort William to the summit. Here the ‘pony track’ or tourist path zig zags up to the summit. But it’s the mountains North-eastern aspect that is so impressive. It comprises of a complex array of massive cliffs and corries 2000ft high that host both superb winter climbs and summer rock climbs. A south-easterly ridge drops down from the summit and curves round in the beautiful arc of the ‘Carn Mor Dearg arête’ and rises to the satellite peak of Carn Mor Dearg 1220m. The summit has the remains of an old observatory and the views, quite naturally are the best and most extensive in Scotland.
