A large castle with a spectacular facade of faceted stonework, added by the Earl of Bothwell between 1581 and 1591, following a visit to Italy.

Its sturdy tower of the late 1300s stands by a sophisticated facade created 200 years later.Crichton was besieged several times and hosted a spectacular society wedding attended by Mary Queen of Scots. The castle's ruins, framed by a secluded valley, were celebrated by writer Walter Scott and artist J.M.W. Turner.
