Hermitage Castle (HS)
A vast eerie fortress, at the heart of many of the bloodiest events in the history of the Borders.
Soak up the eerie, powerful atmosphere of an imposing stronghold with a notorious reputation. One of the great Borders castles, Hermitage dates back to the 1300s. Look for the garrison's cesspit and seek shelter under the great arch if it rains.Legend holds that Hermitage's lord, William De Soulis, was boiled in lead by locals for undertaking black magic rituals. His demonic familiar Robin Redcap is said to haunt the castle grounds. Mary Queen of Scots visited her future husband Bothwell here.
