Smailholm Tower (HS)

Smailholm Tower (HS)
Sited high on a rocky outcrop this well preserved 16th century tower house was built for defence.
This 20-metre high stronghold, built in the 1400s dominates the skyline. On a clear day you can see as far as Banburgh Castle in Northumberland. The author Sir Walter Scott spent much of his childhood on a farm below the tower, where he first heard stories that made up his 'Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border', the subject of an exhibition here.
