Brough of Birsay (HS)

Brough of Birsay (HS)
On this island, easily accessible at low tide, there was once a major Pictish and Viking settlement.
When the tide permits, you can cross the causeway to this historic island. It was a place of local and perhaps regional importance, first for the Picts and later for Norse settlers. The remains of the Norse settlement include a ruined, Romanesque church that was a place of pilgrimage into the Middle Ages. This is also a great place to hunt among the rockpools, collect shells and watch puffins gathering on the rocks in early summer.
