Ardroil Beach -Uig Sands

This is one of the most unusual landscapes in Britain with a vast expanse of flat sand surrounded by sand dunes.

This is one of the most unusual landscapes in Britain with a vast expanse of flat sand surrounded by sand dunes. The sands are best reached from the south and are signposted Ardroil Beach. On the way to the beach you will pass a magnificent wooden statue of a chessman. It celebrates the discovery near here in 1831 of the famous Uig Chessmen. The 78 pieces were carved in Norway in the 12th century, mostly from walrus ivory. They can be seen in the British Museum and the Museum of Scotland. From the statue there is an attractive path out through the dunes to the outer beach.
